Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) shock and trauma therapy is a psycho-physiological approach to resolving trauma symptoms. It is highly recommended for people who have been exposed to shock, prolonged stress, or other overwhelming experiences. It gives the body the chance to re-regulate a nervous system that has lost its natural resilience, i.e. the ability to cope with stress and recover from it.

A trauma is caused by an event that overruns our boundaries and leaves us overwhelmed and helpless. When we feel severely threatened inbuilt fight, flight or freeze responses take over in order to secure our survival. After difficult incidents our nervous system may still be alarmed and ready for fight or flight (stuck on “on”), or overwhelmed and in freeze mode (stuck on “off”). This may cause diverse symptoms, e.g.:

  • hypervigilance (being on guard all the time)
  • hyperactivity
  • need to control
  • inability to relax
  • exaggerated startle response, fears, and panic attacks
  • headaches, immune deficiencies, digestive problems
  • hypersensitivity to sounds/lights
  • sleeping disorders, nightmares, flashbacks
  • inability to feel the body
  • inability to lovingly bond with others, alienation
  • lowered stress tolerance
  • avoidance of certain situations
  • denial
  • shame
  • depression
  • chronic fatigue
  • chronic pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • other symptoms of the PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) spectrum incl.
  • unclear symptoms.

Somatic Experiencing frees up fight, flight, and freeze energy that lies encapsulated in the body. It re-establishes the body’s ability to self-regulate. Somatic Experiencing can therefore be used for working with traumas even if there are no memories of any traumatic event.

In order to prevent re-traumatization we work in a titrated way, e.g. we let the body discharge small doses at a time.

Somatic Experiencing lets us re-negotiate difficult experiences and reconnect with our resources and inherent health.
