Somatic Meditation

As modern Western people we live busy lives and may long for a break from the ongoing mental activity of our mind. One motivation for practicing meditation is to deal with stress and to find a way to relax. But often we are having a hard time “just” sitting on a meditation cushion, stopping our mind from chattering, watching our breath.

Different meditation traditions have known for centuries that quieting the mind only is possible after we have let go of the tensions we are carrying in our body. That is why we are using the body as our tool in the meditations. Some of the somatic, e.g. body-based meditations offered here have been specifically designed for the modern man by the Indian mystic Osho. Others come from ancient practices of Tibetan yoga and are inspired by Reginald A. Ray, Tibetan Buddhist teacher and student of the Meditation Master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

Somatic meditations use physical activity, bodily sensations, sense perceptions, and other body-based techniques as a way to experience meditation through the body. These techniques are supporting the release of stress and tensions and ease our way from discursive thinking to a nourishing and replenishing space of quiet.

Osho Nadabrahma Meditation

nadabrahma meditation

Nadabrahma Meditation is one of Osho’s quiet meditations. Originally it is an ancient Tibetan technique that traditionally was practiced in the early morning.

Nadabrahma means “sound of the universe”. This meditation takes 1 hour and is balancing your energies. It uses Tibetan singing bowls, humming, and silence.

It is recommended to do Nadabrahma meditation on an empty stomach.

Meditation

Meditation alone won’t do: the body has to be brought in.
That is why, in my meditation techniques, I do not take you as divided: you are one.
If your mind is feeling angry, allow your body to be angry.
If your mind is feeling happy, allow your body to dance.
Do not create a division. Let yourself come deep down into the body, and allow the body to flow to your innermost core.
Become a flow!
– Osho

People don’t realize how profound relaxation is. Relaxation means you start to listen to your body. When you start to listen to your body, your whole life begins to open up. When your life begins to open up you begin to engage a kind of death and rebirth process.
– Reggie Ray PhD

Are you looking for me?
I am in the next seat.
My shoulder is against yours.
You will not find me in the stupas,
not in the Indian shrines, nor in synagogues,
nor in cathedrals, not in masses, nor kirtans.
Not in the legs winding around your neck,
nor in eating nothing but vegetables.
When you really look for me,
you will see me instantly.
you will find me in the tiniest house of time,
Kabir says: Student, tell me what is God?
He is the breath inside the breath.
– Kabir
